A character's status is the relationship that shows the basic reaction that other members of society will have to him/her. It also indicates what his/her rights are within the local society. If a character travels around, his/her status may or may not be relevant in other cultures, or they may simply treat him as "freeman" equivalent.
| Status | cp value | Examples of rights |
| Slave/escaped slave | -8 | no rights at all; character is property |
| Peasant | -4 | feudal right to protection; right to trial under common law |
| Freeman | 0 | right to travel freely and seek employment where he/she wishes |
| Officer/merchant | 2 | right to employ/command others; right to live permanently in area |
| Noble/chief | 4 | right to command; right to trial by combat |
| Royalty | 6 | right to command nobility; in line for succession to throne |
| Ruler | 10 | absolute rule |
In addition to the above, if a character is in a society which discriminates against his/her gender, this counts as an additional -2 cps. Examples of this include women in mediaeval Europe, and men in an amazon society.
