2.12.1 Mathematics

Administration skill includes an understanding of mathematics. This can help a character to solve mathematical problems or to understand mathematical arguments.

Working out a mathematical problem

A character can solve a mathematical problem if he/she makes a dice roll using his Administration (including mathematics specialism) + WP.

The difficulty varies on how hard the problem is, as follows:

Type of mathematical problem Typical difficulty
Simple arithmetic (e.g. addition or subtraction) 1
Less simple arithmetic (e.g. multiplication, long division) 2
Complex arithmetic (e.g. fractions, percentages) 3
Simple algebra and equations 4
Probabilities 5
Trigonometry and geometry 6
Use of logarithms 7
Quadratic equations 8
Vectors 9
Matrices 10
Calculus 11
Statistical analysis 12
Differential equations 13
Tensors 14
Group theory and number theory 15

There is a penalty of -3 on the dice roll if the character is not familiar with the technique required to solve the problem (i.e. has never been taught the technique required).

Understanding a mathematical argument or proof

A character can understand a mathematical argument or proof (i.e. the technique used to solve a problem) when it is explained or presented to him/her if he/she makes a dice roll using his Administration (including mathematics specialism) + IQ.

The difficulty depends on the technique being explained (see above).

If a character has never successfully understood the use of a particular mathematical technique, he/she will have a penalty on all attempts to solve problems using that technique (see above).
