2.20.4 Training animals

A character can train an animal if he/she spends a month breaking the animal in and makes a dice roll using the relevant skill (see below) + WP.

Type of animal Relevant skill
Domesticated animal Farming
Wild animal Survival
Mount or team of animals pulling a vehicle Riding

The maximum number of animals that a character can train at one time is equal to his/her skill score.

The difficulty of the dice roll depends on how easily trainable the animal is, as follows:

Situation Difficulty value
Animal is easily trained/influenced (e.g. horse, dog) 5
Animal is domesticated, but not easily trained (e.g. cow, pig) 10
Animal is virtually untrainable 15

If the dice roll succeeds, the animal will be broken in and will follow the character's instructions; over time, the animal can then be trained to perform particular actions (it typically takes a month to teach an animal a particular action, though this varies considerably). If the dice roll fails, the animal has resisted and the character will have to spend another month trying to break in the animal.

If the character mistreats the animal during training (e.g. applying sporadic violence), he/she is more likely to break the animal, so gets a bonus of +2 on the dice roll; however, if the dice roll fails, the animal will turn on him/her and attack him/her.
