On any battle turn in which a character is engaged in melee or missile combat, the character must make a dice roll using his/her Tactics + IQ.
The result of this Battle tactics dice roll has two impacts:
Firstly, if the dice roll result is high enough, the character can choose to optionally change his/her disposition from that assigned to him/her by his/her unit commander, as follows:
Battle tactics dice roll result | Impact on disposition |
5 or lower | No impact |
6-11 | Character may change disposition by one level in either direction (e.g. main body to vanguard) |
12-17 | Character may change disposition by two levels in either direction (e.g. main body to heroic) |
18+ | Character can choose any disposition |
Secondly, the character's Battle tactics dice roll result can improve his chance of gaining glory and/or of surviving the battle turn. Depending on the circumstances, the character can add up to half the Battle tactics dice roll result to one of the subsequent battle dice rolls (ignore negative dice roll results). The character should choose what style of fighting he/she is adopting for that battle turn - this then affects where he/she will get bonuses, as follows:
Style of fighting | Modifier to Battle glory dice roll | Modifier to Battle survival dice roll |
Defensive | -3 | +3 +Battle tactics dice roll result x 1/2 |
Normal | + Battle tactics dice roll result x 1/4 | + Battle tactics dice roll result x 1/4 |
All-out attack | +3 +Battle tactics dice roll result x 1/2 | -3 |
If a character is berserking, he/she must choose All-out attack, and has a penalty on the Battle tactics dice roll of between -1 and -6 depending on how unhinged he/she has become.
