4.2.14 Suppression enchantments

Enchantment nature: Suppression

Magical skill used: Air, Countering, Darkness, Death, Earth, Fire, Illusion, Life, Light, Projection, Stasis, Truth, Water; Countering magic is best.

Characteristic used: IQ

Description: A suppression enchantment allows the caster to temporarily (or permanently) decrease the effectiveness of an existing enchantment. Suppression enchantments can be cast as reactions to incoming magical enchantments (to nullify or reduce them before they take effect).

With the exception of Countering and Enhancement magical skills, each magical skill can be used to suppress magic of the same magical skill (through wresting control) or the opposing magical skill (through creating an equal and opposing magical force). Countering magical skill can be used to suppress any enchantment.

Power: The power of a suppression enchantment determines how much the existing enchantment is enhanced. Provided the suppression is effective (see Finesse below), each point of Power in the suppression enchantment may be used to do one of the following:

The minimum Power of a suppression enchantment is 1.

If the Power of the existing enchantment is reduced to zero, it has no effect and is effectively nullified for the duration of the suppression enchantment over the area of effect of the suppression enchantment.

Finesse: The finesse of a suppression enchantment determines whether the suppression enchantment is subtle enough to affect the existing enchantment being targetted. For a suppression enchantment to have any effect, the Finesse of the suppression enchantment must be at least as high as the Finesse of the existing enchantment being targetted.

Duration: The duration of a suppression enchantment determines how long the existing enchantment will be suppressed. To permanently nullify an existing enchantment, the duration of the suppression enchantment must be at least as long as the remaining duration of the existing enchantment. Otherwise, the suppression will be temporary only.

Area of effect: This shows the area over which the existing enchantment is affected. To nullify an existing enchantment over its full area, the area of effect of the suppression enchantment must be at least large as that of the existing enchantment. Otherwise, the suppression will take effect over part of the area only.

Limitations: The magical skill used limits what kind of suppression the caster can perform. The referee should apply discretion, but the following list may help.

Air Air/earth countermagic. May only suppress existing Air magic or Earth magic enchantments.

Examples:

Tim has a Fire magic score of 5 with no specialism in suppression spells, and a IQ of +0. In a combat, a inimical water magician casts an attack spell at him (any icy shard hurtles towards Tim with Power 4 and Finesse 3). Tim reacts by instantly casting a counterspell to suppress the incoming attack. He, therefore, seeks to cast a Suppression enchantment with Power 4 (enough to nullify the attack), Finesse 3 (must equal or exceed that of the incoming attack), Range Self (i.e. 0, since he is the target of the incoming attack), Concealment 0 (his countermagic will be obvious), Duration instantaneous (i.e. 0, no more is required since the duration of the attack spell is instantaneous), Area of effect Single target (i.e. 0), Investment 0 = Difficulty 7 in total. His basic value is 5 + 0 = 5. He decides to use hand gestures and words when casting to give a modifier of +2, giving a basic value of 7, enough to guarantee success. A blast of fire issues from his hands and melts the ice shard before it strikes him. Smirking, Tim shouts "You'll have to do better than that!" to the enemy magician.
